Lead Scholar: Karenne Wood (Monacan) is a Ford pre-doctoral fellow in anthropology at the University of Virginia. She is a former researcher at the National Museum of the American Indian and served as chair of the Virginia Council on Indians for four years. She now directs the Virginia Indian Heritage Program at the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.
Assistant Scholar: Rhyannon Berkowitz (Creek) is a PhD fellow in cultural anthropology at the University of Virginia. She has worked with Virtual Jamestown and was a project developer at Historic Jamestowne.
Assistant Scholar: Lisa Heuvel is a PhD candidate in the School of Education, College of William and Mary. She works in educational media at Colonial Williamsburg.
Deanna Beacham is the Program Specialist at the Virginia Council on Indians. She regularly reviews archaeological reports and educational materials for historical accuracy.
Gerri Reynolds Wade (Rappahannock) is a former school principal with expertise in special education. She directs Hope Tree, a Baptist housing project for disabled adults. She recently served on the review committee for Virginia Standards of Learning in the Social Sciences.
Arlene and Jack Milner represent the Upper Mattaponi Tribe as speakers and educators. Arlene also serves on the Board of the Virginia Museum of Natural History.
Ashley Atkins (Pamunkey) is a PhD student in cultural anthropology at the College of William and Mary and is currently co-curating the "Beyond Jamestown" exhibit at James Madison University.
Jeffrey Hantman, Ph.D., is associate professor of anthropology at the University of Virginia. He is an archaeologist who has extensively studied the material culture of the Monacan and other Siouan peoples in the central Virginia piedmont.
Kent Mountford, Ph.D., is Senior Scientist with the U.S. EPA, Chesapeake Bay Program in Annapolis, MD. He is the author of Closed Sea, From the Manasquat to the Mullica: A History of Barnegat Bay.
Helen Rountree, Ph.D., is professor emeritus at Old Dominion University and is widely recognized as the preeminent anthropological authority on Powhatan tribes’ history and cultures. She has authored numerous works, including the classic Pocahontas’s People.
Sharon Bryant is a Monacan Tribal Council member who produced an educational video through the VFH entitled Reclaiming Our Heritage: The Monacan Indian Nation of Virginia.
Ken Adams is Chief of the Upper Mattaponi Tribe. He served as the Project Specialist for Jamestown 2007, coordinating programs for the Virginia tribes, and he is a widely known speaker on Virginia Indian issues and history.
