Grant Opportunity

The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities has established a new grant program to support projects that explore the history and cultures of Virginia’s Indian communities, past and present. This grant program is open to any non-profit organization engaged in research, interpretation, and preservation of Virginia Indian history and culture. Virginia’s tribes and inter-tribal organizations, museums, local historical societies, and others are encouraged to apply.

Projects may focus on the histories and cultures of individual tribes, or more broadly on the experience of Indian people and communities within the Commonwealth. We are especially interested in projects in which Native people present their own stories and their own perspectives on Virginia’s past, on Indian culture(s), or on the relationship between their communities and the issues that affect Virginia as a whole.

To be competitive for funding, projects must involve Native scholars and/or acknowledged tribal authorities in all phases of the program, from planning to evaluation. Collaborations among Native and non-Native scholars are welcome and are strongly encouraged.

Proposals for Virginia Indian Heritage Program Grants may be submitted at any time through the Foundation’s Open and Discretionary Grant programs. Standard VFH Grant Guidelines (pdf), review procedures, and proposal deadlines apply. Prospective applicants are urged to consult with VFH staff in advance and to submit a draft proposal at least three weeks in advance of the formal application.

For further information, contact Karenne Wood, Virginia Indian Heritage Program Director (kgw5h@virginia.edu; 434-243-2186) or David Bearinger, Director of Grants and Public Programs (dab@virginia.edu; 434-924-3296).

The Virginia Indian Heritage Program is a partnership between the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and the leaders of Virginia’s eight state-recognized tribes. Funding for the Virginia Indian Heritage Program is provided by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
