Sunday July 25, 2010
10:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Downtown Mall, in front of the Pavilion
700 East Main Street map it
Charlottesville, VA 22902

This multi-media travelling exhibit examines the history and evolution of slavery in Floridas fields: its roots, the reasons it persists, and its solutions, featuring exhibits on chattel slavery, convict-lease, sharecropping & debt peonage, and a cargo truck outfitted as a replica of the vehicle used to enslave Florida tomato pickers in a brutal case prosecuted by the US Dept. of Justice in 2008 (US vs. Navarrete). A century and a half after the Civil War, forms of slavery continue to exist in the world, including in the United States. This Mobile Museum brings to light this modern tragedy and should inspire us to take action against it. ---Eric Foner, DeWitt Clinton Professor of History, Columbia University.
