Encyclopedia Virginia (EV) is a multi-year online reference publication of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities set to debut in the near future. EV will chronicle the heritage of Virginia through the perspectives of all the ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse peoples that have lived here and have helped make the state what it is today.
By including multiple perspectives on a wide range of topics, EV will tell the story of Virginia as a dialogue in order to present the fullest picture possible. EV will not only reflect Virginia’s past and present, but it will also serve as an innovative learning resource that promotes a greater understanding of Virginia and Virginians for the future.
The mission of Encyclopedia Virginia will be to chronicle the state’s history, politics, and geography; describe the state’s heritage in arts, religion, culture, and folklife; provide information on science, medicine, education, business, and technology; and interpret the state's significance to Virginia, the nation, and the world.
The purpose of EV is to become the first point of reference for all users interested in Virginia and to provide authoritative and accessible information for students, teachers, scholars, and business, industry, and government when they have a question about Virginia's history and culture.
A long-time supporter of the Virginia Festival of the Book, Dominion has recently announced a leadership gift that will benefit the Foundation's Encyclopedia Virginia. VFH gratefully acknowledges Dominion's generous support.
