Virginia Foundation for the Humanities

Grant Program

The VFH grant program accepts proposals from nonprofit organizations seeking funding to develop public humanities programs for audiences in Virginia. Since 1974, VFH has awarded more than 2,500 grants, bringing scholars and citizens together to promote a greater understanding of the humanities.

Notice to All Prospective Grant Applicants

VFH is converting to an on-line system for all grant applications, beginning immediately. This change applies to both Open and Discretionary grant proposals.

Beginning April 1, 2010, all applicants are expected to submit their grant requests electronically.

Please note: we are still requiring that one copy of the on-line application be printed and submitted, with original signatures, as part of the application process. This applies to Open and Discretionary grants.

For Open Grant applications, the submission deadline for the on-line proposal is 5 p.m.; the single matching paper copy should be postmarked by the deadline day, or within 48 hours in the event the deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday.

We have worked hard to create an on-line application process that is straightforward and simple to use, with instructions that are clear and easy to understand.

Previous applicants will find many similarities between the new system and the old paper system. Most of the information we require remains the same.

The VFH staff is happy to offer assistance to grant applicants during this transition period. We also welcome your suggestions about ways the new on-line system can be improved.

If you have questions about the on-line grant application process, please contact Jeanne Siler, Program Associate for Grants, at 434-243-5522; or vfhgrants@virginia.edu.

Grant Opportunities

The Open Grant Program is open to proposals on a wide range of subjects, for projects in any format, and for amounts typically up to $10,000. Open Grant deadlines are February 1st, May 1st, and October 15th.

The Discretionary Grant Program allows VFH to make smaller grants of up to $3,000. There is no deadline for this program; applications are accepted at any time.

Virginia Indian Heritage Program Grants support projects that explore the history and cultures of Virginia’s Indian communities, past and present.
