Grant Program
The VFH grant program accepts proposals from nonprofit organizations seeking funding to develop public humanities programs for audiences in Virginia. Since 1974, VFH has awarded more than 2,500 grants, bringing scholars and citizens together to promote a greater understanding of the humanities.
The VFH Grant Application Guidelines are currently being revised. The new Guidelines will be available on the VFH Website and in a hard-copy version soon.
In the meantime, please note the following new/revised provisions of the VFH Grant Guidelines, effective immediately.
Discretionary Grants
Decisions on Discretionary Grant applications are normally made within four weeks, following our receipt of the proposal.
Proposal Requirements
Resumes or vitae must be limited to no more than two pages. Additional pages will not be considered. In some cases, a brief biographical statement focusing on the individual’s professional/academic background and qualifications may be attached in lieu of a more formal resume or curriculum vita.
Draft Proposals
Draft proposals are encouraged. These should be submitted at least three weeks prior to the application deadline. Draft proposals received less than one week prior to the deadline will not be considered except under special circumstances requiring VFH staff approval in advance.
The Open Grant Program is open to proposals on a wide range of subjects, for projects in any format, and for amounts typically up to $10,000. Open Grant deadlines are February 1st, May 1st, and October 15th.
The Discretionary Grant Program allows VFH to make smaller grants of up to $2,500. There is no deadline for this program; applications are accepted at any time.
The African American History Mini Grant Program increases public understanding of African American history and culture in Virginia by awarding grants of up to $3,000. The application deadline is February 1 of each year.
Virginia Indian Heritage Program Grants support projects that explore the history and cultures of Virginia’s Indian communities, past and present.
