VIRGINIA FOUNDATION FOR THE HUMANITIES ANNOUNCES
GRANTS TO ORGANIZATIONS THROUGHOUT VIRGINIA

                                                                 
The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH) has awarded 15 grants totaling $103,700 to assist Virginia organizations in their efforts to research and interpret Virginia’s rich history, to explore issues of importance to Virginians, and to showcase Virginia’s folklife and cultural heritage.

Recipients of the grants include museums, colleges and universities, African American heritage organizations, civic groups, and historic sites.  The funds will be used to support documentary projects, exhibits, oral history research and collections, teachers’ institutes, film festivals, CD music development and production, and conferences. Grant-supported activities will take place across Virginia cities and counties, from Falls Church to Ferrum, from Big Stone Gap to Eastville.

Funds for this program have been provided by private donors, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and by the National Endowment for the Humanities through its “We The People” initiative.

Grants were awarded to the following organizations and projects:

Arts Enter Cape Charles                  Cape Charles, VA
A Theatre Lives: The Story of the Palace Theatre

$5,000 to support publication of a booklet on the history and architectural significance of the Palace Theatre in Cape Charles.

Berryville Main Street                                  Berryville, VA
Roots of American Music

$3,250 to support a series of lectures and performance-discussion programs on American musical traditions entitled "The Roots of American Music."


CITYCELEBRATIONS                  Richmond, VA
National Folk Festival: Material Culture Exhibit

$10,000 to support a series of interpretive programs on "the working arts of Virginia," to be presented as part of the 2006 National Folk Festival in Richmond.

City of Harrisonburg                                    Harrisonburg, VA
African American Heritage Site Tour Booklet

$8,000  to support publication of a brochure/driving tour booklet on African American Heritage sites in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

Friends of Fairview                          Staunton, VA
Fairview Cemetery Project

$7,000 to support portions of a community history project on African American history in Staunton, using a six-acre local cemetery as the springboard.

Hampton University                                    Hampton, VA
Literary Reading Series

$3,000 to support a panel discussion focusing on the ways in which stories express and engage their readers in the search for identity and "home."

Isle of Wight County Museum Foundation, Inc.  Smithfield, VA
"Publique Ffaire"

$7,000 to support the re-creation of a "Publique Ffaire" similar to those that were licensed by the Virginia Colonial government in the seventeenth century to encourage trade and other forms of beneficial interchange between the colonists and local Indian tribes, the Nansemond in particular.

Journey Through Hallowed Ground                       Waterford, VA
The Power of Place

$10,000 to support research leading to the creation of African American historic sites whithin the 175-mile historic corridor covered by the larger "Journey Through Hallowed Ground" project.

Freeing Art From Wood: The Sculptures of Leslie Garland Bolling

$7,200 to support development of an interpretive brochure and interactive video to accompany an exhibit of wood sculptures by the Virginia artist Leslie Garland Bolling, an African American born in Surry County in 1898 who worked and exhibited in Richmond and nationwide in the 1930s and 40s.

South Asian Literary and Theater Arts Festival (SALTAF)

$5,000 to support the sixth annual South Asian Literary and Theatre Arts Festival in 2006.
Petersburg Garden Club                  Petersburg, VA
Rediscovering the Forgotten Garden

$8,000 to support development of a website exhibit, printed materials, and public symposium on the history of Lee Park in Petersburg. The Park and its botanical preserve were created during the 1930s through an unusual collaborative effort involving black and white women from the Petersburg area.

Prince William County Historic Preservation Division   Woodbridge, VA
Lucasville School African American History Exhibition Project

$10,000 to support design and production of an exhibit and two related publications on the history of Lucasville School, a one-room school for African American children that is the only school building of its kind remaining in Prince William County.

Virginia Wesleyan College              Norfolk, VA
Creationism, Evolution and Intelligent Design: Religion and Science in the Public Schools

$5,000 to support a public symposium on the subject of Creationism, Evolution, and Intelligent Design, exploring issues surrounding religion and the public schools.

Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art                    Salisbury, MD
Decoy Carving Traditions of Virginia's Eastern Shore

$9,000 to support the 2006 annual Chesapeake waterfowl Expo, focusing on decoy carving and related traditions native to Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Washington and Lee University                 Lexington, VA
Not Unmindful of the Future: The Educational Visions of George Washington and Robert E. Lee

$6,250 to support planning for a series of exhibits and related programs, all focusing on various aspects of the lives, character, and educational contributions of George Washington and Robert E. Lee.

The Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy, based in Charlottesville, is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to promoting the humanities, and to using the humanities to address issues of broad public concern.

In all of its programs, the Foundations works to make scholarship accessible; to promote understanding and discussion of enduring and contemporary issues; and to broaden the range of educational opportunities available to all Virginians.
