Endowed Fellowships
Two of the VFH Fellowships are supported by endowments. Selection for these Fellowships is made in the course of the standard review process, and there is no need to apply for them specifically. However, each does support particular activities or perspectives; proposals that address these are encouraged.
The Edna and Norman Freehling Fellowship in South Atlantic Studies
The Edna and Norman Freehling Fellowship in South Atlantic Studies was established by historian William W. Freehling in honor of his parents. At this time, the Freehling Fellowship is supporting research and writing on the South Atlantic region (the Atlantic and Caribbean South), particularly projects that involve multiple places or parts of the region, or that address one of the following themes:
- South Atlantic Itineraries -- individual or collective patterns of movement (trips, migrations, circuits, roads or other pathways) of significance to understanding the region;
- connections between water and communities in the region, recognizing that "Water connects people in manifold ways--to one another within a community, to their environment, and to other communities"; or
- railroads, their workers, their construction and operation, and their role in the region.
The Emilia Galli Struppa Fellowship in the Humanities
The Emilia Galli Struppa Fewllowship was established by Daniele Struppa in memory of his mother, a dedicated scholar and teacher of the Classics. The Struppa Fellowship supports work in history and literature that is academically rich and relevant to the public humanities. This includes both original, largely academic research and writing, and writing for public audiences that makes current research accessible to a wider readership.
Create an Endowed Fellowship
The Fellowship program relies on endowments to support its Fellows. If you would like to support research in the public interest, please consider a gift of this kind.
