Selection Criteria
Within these guidelines, participants will be selected by a local committee comprised of the seminar director, a representative of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities (VFH), and an experienced teacher in the schools.  The committee will seek prospective participants with records (including promise) of professional development, energetic involvement, and realistic plans to implement their ROOTS experience in teaching, curriculum, or in other ways.  Selection criteria specifically do not include experience with Africa, or formal training in academic disciplines;  teachers with professional degrees are warmly encouraged to apply.  The committee will also consider two letters of reference, sent separately to the director, attesting to the applicant’s interests and qualifications.

The director intends to assemble as wide a range and mutually stimulating group of participants as possible – including diverse professional responsibilities as well as institutional/system settings, academic training, and personal backgrounds.
